An automation game you program

Botwright

A time machine fails, and you land in a medieval village with a wrist computer and a handful of bots. Teach them to work by writing real code in a Python subset.

What it is

Botwright is a game about automation. Bots do nothing until you tell them what to do, and you tell them in code: find a tree, chop it, carry the trunk to the stockpile, repeat. Start with a few lines, then grow a village of workers that saws planks, mines ore and smelts iron while you plan the next thing.

The language is a small, honest subset of Python, with while loops, functions, lists and await for anything that takes time. The in-game editor completes names as you type, and the ship's computer, slightly damaged by the crash, answers questions when you are stuck.

while True:
    tree = find(Kind.TREE, radius=15)
    if tree is None:
        await sleep(5)
        continue
    trunk = await chop_tree(tree)
    if trunk is not None:
        await pickup_object(trunk)
        await drop_at(areas.depot)
The time traveler in an orange jumpsuit standing beside his crashed white capsule on a grassy field
The crash site: you, the capsule, and no memory of how you got here.
A forested island seen from above, with two timber-framed houses near the beach
The island. Every tree is work for a bot.

One zip per platform: unpack it and start the game. The game starts its own server and works offline, except for the ship's computer, which needs an internet connection.
